Classical ballet, contemporary, flamenco, urban dance and adult classes for complete beginners. Two studios with sprung floors, groups by level rather than age, and the cost of the show announced in January, not in May.

Five disciplines plus an introductory class for the youngest. Groups are formed by level: an eleven-year-old with five years of training isn't in the same room as one just starting.

Contemporary

Floor work, weight, breath and plenty of improvisation. It's the class where classical dancers loosen up fastest, and where teenagers who won't hear the word ballet fit best.
FlamencoLive guitar every month
from €38 a month
Compás, arm work and footwork, through tangos, alegrías and bulerías. With a live guitarist once a month, which is when the rhythm finally clicks. Flamenco shoes from the second term.
Urban dance
from €38 a month
Hip hop, house and music-video choreography for teenagers. It's the fullest class and the most shared on video, so we film it once a term in the big studio.
Adults, from scratchNo experience needed
from €38 a month
Ballet, contemporary and flamenco for adults, 8:00 to 10:00 pm. No previous experience and no obligation to appear in the show. Most started after thirty and come for pleasure, not for a CV.
Introduction (ages 4 and 5)
€38 a month
Forty-five minutes of playing with music: balance, rhythm, coordination and learning to wait your turn. It isn't ballet yet and doesn't try to be, and they appear in the show too, with a two-minute piece.

June
The end-of-year show, explained before it arrives
A real theatre, with lights, a morning soundcheck and every class in the school on stage. It's the best part of the year and also the one that raises the most questions, so here are the answers in one go: taking part is NOT compulsory; each costume costs €35-55 and the exact amount is announced in January, not May; the Saturday rehearsals from April to June are included in the fee; and tickets are sold by the theatre, not by us.

Who we are
We dance for the love of it, and still learn proper technique
Alzada was opened in 2012 by three dancers from different companies who agreed on one thing: you can teach serious technique without a nine-year-old ending up in tears in front of the mirror.
Groups are formed by level rather than age, dancers go en pointe when their body is ready rather than when the calendar says, and the show is a celebration, not an exam. There are three of us plus a pianist who comes on Mondays: adults make up almost half the studio, and many of them had never danced before walking in here.

The two studios
Barre, mirror, floor and shoes: you can see what a studio is like without anyone's face. When you add your own photos, keep the same rule: most of your students are minors, and image consents expire, get withdrawn and create work.
Come to a trial class
You join whichever class matches your level, dance the full hour and decide afterwards. There's nothing to buy in advance: comfortable clothes and socks are enough.

How much does the end-of-year show cost?
Each costume costs €35-55 depending on what it involves, and the exact amount is announced in January so nobody is caught out in May. The Saturday rehearsals from April to June are included in the fee. Theatre tickets are sold by the theatre and we don't set their price. And taking part isn't compulsory: anyone who'd rather not simply carries on coming to class.
Do I need previous experience?
No. There's a level 1 group in every discipline, and the adult classes exist precisely for people starting from zero. Groups are formed by level, so you won't end up behind someone with eight years of training.
What do I need to buy, and when?
For the trial class, nothing: comfortable clothes and socks. If you stay, a leotard, tights and soft shoes, €45-70 depending on size, bought wherever you like. Pointe shoes and flamenco shoes only when the teacher says so, never earlier: pointe shoes bought too soon are wasted money and a risk to the ankle.
At what age do dancers go en pointe?
When the ankle and the technique are ready, usually from age eleven and after at least three years of classical training. It isn't decided by age or by eagerness: the teacher decides, by looking at the foot. Going up too early is the fastest route to injury.
I'm an adult and I'm self-conscious. Will I feel out of place?
Almost half the studio are adults and most had never danced before. Adult classes run from 8:00 to 10:00 pm, contemporary doesn't force you to face the mirror, and nobody is watching anybody: everyone is busy with their own foot. With the open pass you come on the days you can, with nothing to sign up for.
Can I start in January?
Yes, at any point in the season, as long as there's space at your level. You pay in full for the month you join and then month by month, with no lock-in: to leave, just tell us before the month ends. If you join after February, the show is optional and we'll talk it through with you, because the pieces are already set.
